siding and other materials that make up your home are protected
by your roof and eave, but your chimney is not. Because
the chimney extends beyond the roofline it is constantly
exposed to the elements; rain, snow, wind, etc. Masonry
materials deteriorate very quickly when they absorb moisture
and are exposed to winter freeze & thaw cycles, causing
undue stress and premature deterioration.
Magik's Hundred Year Crown design protects your chimney
against these elements, ensuring that it will be the last
crown you'll ever need!
designed and constructed chimney crown is the best possible
protection for the masonry construction below it by helping
to shed rain, snow, and ice away from the rest of the chimney.
It can prevent the need for expensive chimney repairs &
chimney reconstruction. As the name suggests, a chimney
crown is the top element of a masonry chimney. It protects
the top of the chimney starting at the flue liner and should
extend out beyond the chimneys edge (drip edge) much the
same as a roof eave does. The vast majority of existing
chimneys have "crowns" which are built incorrectly.
Many do not have a drip edge at all; while many more of
these substandard "crowns" are constructed from
common mortar mix - the same mixture used to lay the bricks
of the chimney. This type of mortar was not designed for
this purpose and is unable to withstand years of envionmental
abuse without cracking, chipping or deteriorating prematurely;
conditions which can allow water to penetrate the chimney
and cause damage which is expensive to repair.
FIVE C's OF CHIMNEY CARE - PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE TIPS
YOU SHOULD KEEP IN MIND
'Em - Chimneys should be cleaned and inspected
at least once a year to ensure their safe and efficient
operation. With an annual cleaning and inspection regimen
potential problems can usually be caught before they turn
into an expensive repair bill, or worse, catastophic failure
'Em - After careful inspection, any defects discovered
such as loose or crumbling mortar or bricks, cracks, spalling,
etc. should be fixed as soon as possible. Taking care of
these problems before they grow into major repairs can save
you thousands of dollars down the road.
'Em - Waterproofing your masonry is one of the
most cost effective insurance policies against long term
damage we can think of. Read more about its effectiveness
'Em - See above.
'Em - Raincaps are primarily designed to prevent
rain from entering the chimney, causing damper and firebox
rust which can lead to expensive repairs. But they can also
prevent unwanted birds, squirrels, raccoons or other animals
from entering the chimney to nest. They can also help to
